My New York Times 2 Piece Bathing Suit

garry24_R4_E079.jpg

I’ve never had a photo of myself in the New York Times.  I’ve been quoted from time to time.  But a photo?  Never.  So imagine how I felt when the photo editor asked for me to send him a photo of me and my dad.  And this one was one of the two I could come up with.  My dad was the photographer.  He was always behind the camera.

Except when we were in Beach Haven with my cousins.  My mom is an identical twin and her kids are essentially biological half brothers and sisters.  We were always really close.  And their dad, my Uncle Joe, was this great, generous guy and a bit larger than life.  It always felt like good things happened when we were with their family.

Uncle Joe took this picture.  I’m sure of it.

My kids were mortified that I appeared in the New York Times in a two piece bathing suit.  I told them it could be much worse and they should thank their lucky stars that it was when I was thirteen.
