marriage equality and egg rolls

I know this picture was not taken at the White House Easter Egg Roll this week.  This was the warm-up.  You see, Cathy and Leah’s daughter, Rosemary is shy and retiring and they needed to get her out beforehand so she could loosen up.   Sad that she is so painfully shy.  Poor thing. :)

This week, I followed the expeditions of the gay families I knew who were invited to the White House with their kids. It was a great day for them. For us.  It really is our house, too.

All these conversations and all this coverage has led me to ponder the opposition to marriage equality and how we frame the debate.  I began to think about the millions of kids being raised by gay and lesbian parents and the critical role a marriage license can play in providing protection for these kids.  The role a marriage license can play in ensuring that our society delivers on its promise to look after the best interests of our children.

I wrote a piece this morning for The Star Ledger.  I’d love for you to read it and as importantly, keep a look out for comments.  One of the reasons I write there is that there are many readers for whom gay and lesbian equality is not a high priority.   To put it mildly.

The piece is called Gay Families Roll for Obama.
