creating a family tradition: jewish egg hunt
April 8th, 2009
With four Jews and one Christian (that would be me) in our family, you’d think that I would have limited ability to celebrate ‘my’ holidays. But not true. As Eileen says, Christian holidays are always such fun. And we have these fabulous icons associated with them. We’ve got Santa for Christmas. We’ve got the Easter Bunny for Easter. Jews don’t have such things. The nearest thing Jews have to such things is the Paschal Lamb but we all know how that story ends.
So I am always grateful that Eileen is such a sport about Christmas and Easter. Truthfully, she kind of loves the rituals of Christmas – she has been known to weep only while putting away her favorite tree ornaments. Easter, on the other hand, holds very few warm feelings.
So I created a tradition for Easter Sunday that has stayed with us through the years. I just wrote about it at nj.com. The piece is called Easter Egg Hunt For Jews.
