a tree grows in pittsburgh

October 23rd, 2008

So here I was, canvassing in this tough neighborhood.  It was a beautiful, crisp fall afternoon with the sky that blue blue color it can be sometimes.  And I start to hear these birds.  Not just a couple.  Tons of them.  I look up and see this tree.  Taking up its own space between two not very beautiful houses.  I pull out my handy flip video camera and grabbed this.  I didn’t want to forget what it looked and sounded like.

But before I did, I knocked on the door of the house to the right of the tree.  A man came to the door, smiled at my Obama button and said that he would most certainly be out on Election Day.  I started to walk away, then stopped and turned back.  “The birds in this tree – they are amazing.  Are they always here?”  “Oh yeah.  Every year.” He smiled again in this way that made me realize that he didn’t take those birds for granted.
