a tree grows in pittsburgh
October 23rd, 2008So here I was, canvassing in this tough neighborhood. It was a beautiful, crisp fall afternoon with the sky that blue blue color it can be sometimes. And I start to hear these birds. Not just a couple. Tons of them. I look up and see this tree. Taking up its own space between two not very beautiful houses. I pull out my handy flip video camera and grabbed this. I didn’t want to forget what it looked and sounded like.
But before I did, I knocked on the door of the house to the right of the tree. A man came to the door, smiled at my Obama button and said that he would most certainly be out on Election Day. I started to walk away, then stopped and turned back. “The birds in this tree – they are amazing. Are they always here?” “Oh yeah. Every year.” He smiled again in this way that made me realize that he didn’t take those birds for granted.
